JCB Tutoring
I have over 20 years of experience tutoring High School and University Chemistry, Physics and Math including Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Pre-calculus, and Calculus, including the AP and University versions of these courses and also Middle School Math and Science.
As a tutor it is my responsibility to tailor my approach to fit each student’s learning style, not the other way around. To me, it is important that the student understands the concepts behind the problems. You don’t need to memorize what you understand. Through my many years of experience, I have learned and developed many techniques to simplify the understanding of otherwise difficult topics. I have collected a number of useful resources that I share with my students.
I have taught Chemistry in MCPS Summer School. I have extensive experience tutoring AP Chemistry and University Chemistry, including CHEM 131 and CHEM 132. When tutoring a particular topic, I provide my student with a summary sheet that provides the most important formulas and facts regarding that topic.
Because I know the High School Math Curriculum, I teach Middle School Math students techniques that will help them when they get to High School and College.
Current students represent several private schools, MCPS schools, Montgomery College and universities.
I also help students prepare for Math sections in the SAT, ACT and other standardized tests. I worked for 4 years at a tutoring facility. When I applied for the job, I was required to take an SAT Math test. I got the job because I was the only applicant ever to have gotten 100% on the test. I prepared answer keys for the SAT and helped many students prepare for the test.
It is important to realize that in the SAT and ACT exams there are often two ways to solve a given standardized Math test problem. The first way is straightforward, but time-consuming. The second employs a mathematical insight that makes it faster and easier to solve. I teach these insights to my students.
I work well with students deemed to have learning problems.
Since Covid, I have been tutoring remotely via Zoom. It works well as I use a graphics tablet to directly write equations and formulas and make drawings on my student’s shared screen. I am fully vaccinated and can tutor at a student’s home (as long as an adult is home) or at a public place.
Because it is hard for a student to know when and for how long s/he will need tutoring, I don’t require a regular schedule for tutoring. When tutoring remotely, if a student only needs, for example, ten minutes worth of help, that is all that I bill for. Likewise, the student can go over an hour a little without adding a whole hour as I prorate to the minute.
