Family Fun

Four Seasons of Family Fun

While Montgomery County, Maryland has an exciting nightlife and restaurant scene for the grownups, we also have tons of thrills for the whole family. Whether you’re just looking for a weekend getaway or planning that big annual vacation, load the kids in the van and get inspired with these fun family activities.

Spring

Nothing says “spring” like thousands of butterflies emerging from their cocoons during the Wings of Fancy event at Brookside Gardens.

Swing from the trees at the Adventure Park at Sandy Spring or Go Ape Treetop Adventure Park at Rock Creek Regional Park.

Head to Butler’s Orchard for a hayride down the Bunny Trail during the Bunnyland Festival. Then return in the fall for the Pumpkin Festival.

Summer

Take a spin on the carousel, ride the RIO Express trackless train, and paddle around the picturesque lake in a paddleboat at RIO Washingtonian.

Bring a picnic basket and spend the afternoon at Glen Echo Park. Ride a restored 1921 Dentzel Carousel, attend a show at the Adventure Theatre MTC or The Puppet Company, or get an up-close experience at the Glen Echo Aquarium.

Take a ride on a historic streetcar—out into the woods—at the National Capital Trolley Museum.

Fall

Whether it’s a daytime visit or an evening out, a round of miniature golf at Bohrer Park, Summit Hall Farm, is a great activity for the whole family!

Fall is the perfect time to spend a weekend camping at Little Bennett Campground. Reconnect with nature, tell ghost stories, and eat too many s’mores.

Take a ride across the Potomac River on the historic White’s Ferry in Poolesville. The cars line up on what looks like a boat ramp and drive down onto the ferry. Once loaded, the ferry follows a wire cable to the other side of the Potomac.

Winter

Lace up your skates and learn from the pros at Wheaton Ice Rink, or spend the day at the winter outdoor rink in Rockville Town Square.

Foster a healthy dose of friendly competition at Shadowland Adventures. Choose a code name and enter the huge multi-level area where you interact with an ever-changing environment of lights and sounds.

Bask in the glory of millions of sparkling lights at Garden of Lights at Brookside Gardens, Winter Lights at Seneca Creek State Park, and Festival of Lights at the Washington, DC Temple.
