Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15 to October 15, is a time to honor the rich traditions, contributions, and cultures of Hispanic and Latino communities. In Montgomery County, Maryland, celebrating goes far beyond festivals and parades—it’s woven into the food, history, and everyday experiences that showcase the area’s incredible diversity. If you’re visiting for the first time, here are some of the best ways to learn and commemorate Hispanic culture this season.

Savor Authentic Flavors

The county is home to an extraordinary range of Latin American cuisines. From tacos filled with specialty cheeses, meats, and beans at Tacombi in Bethesda to fresh ceviche bursting with citrus and herbs at La Malinche Spanish and Mexican Tapas in Silver Spring, you’ll find authentic dishes that tell the story of generations. Local family-owned restaurants like El Mercat Bar de Tapas at The Square Rockville that has small Spanish plates with big flavor, or try Peruvian cuisine at La Canela, and bakeries that bring the flavors of El Salvador, Peru, Mexico, Cuba, and beyond to the heart of the county. Sampling these dishes is more than a meal—it’s a chance to experience centuries of culinary tradition.

Explore Local Markets and Bakeries

Step into a panadería like Veronicas Bakery and Café in Silver Spring. In here you can find a variety of Latin American cuisine classics like Pupusas, Carne Asada, Tamales, and more. On the sweet side, the bakery serves traditional pan dulces and pasteles. Bright produce, spices, and specialty ingredients line the shelves, while the scent of freshly baked conchas and tres leches cake fills the air. Shopping local not only supports small businesses, but it also gives you a glimpse into the everyday staples that are central to Hispanic kitchens.

Share Stories Through Music and Dance

From the rhythms of salsa and merengue to the soulful sounds of mariachi and Latin jazz, music is at the heart of Hispanic heritage. Many local restaurants and venues offer live performances where you can experience these traditions up close. Even better, try out a dance class at the Spanish Ballroom at Glen Echo Park or simply move to the beat—Latin music is meant to be felt as much as it is heard.
