Why does Hispanic Heritage Month begin September 15?
The celebration begins on September 15 to coincide with the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16, followed by Chile on September 18, making this a particularly meaningful time to celebrate the diverse cultures and traditions of Latin America.
From Latin American films and local art exhibitions to salsa dancing and family celebrations, there are plenty of ways to explore and celebrate Hispanic heritage throughout Montgomery County. ¡Vamos!

The county is home to an extraordinary range of Latin American cuisines. Colores Opening Reception
Kick off Hispanic Heritage Month at BlackRock Center for the Arts on September 15 from 6–8 p.m. at the opening reception for Colores, an exhibition and art sale featuring Latino artists from Montgomery County and the DMV. Browse vibrant works by local artists, meet the featured creators, enjoy appetizers and drinks, and experience the creativity and culture of the region’s Latino community. Admission is free.
Gaithersburg History Project
Discover the stories and experiences of Gaithersburg’s Latine community at the Gaithersburg Community Muesum with Latine Gaithersburg. Learn about efforts to document the community’s history and explore plans for future research and storytelling. The free program is available in person or online, with Spanish translation available.
Explore Local Markets and Bakeries
Step into a panaderÃa like Veronicas Bakery and Café in Silver Spring. In here you can find a variety of Latin American cuisine classics like Pupusas, Carne Asada, Tamales, and more. On the sweet side, the bakery serves traditional pan dulces and pasteles. AFI Latin American Film Festival
Immerse yourself in the diverse stories and cultures of Latin America, Spain and Portugal at the AFI Latin American Film Festival, taking place September 16–October 7 at AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in Silver Spring. One of North America’s largest and longest-running showcases of Latin American cinema, the festival features films from across the region and opportunities to hear from filmmakers and special guests.
