Born and raised in New Orleans to a French creole family and initially named Antoine Domino (1874- 1964) learned to play from his brother-in-law, the jazz guitarist Harrison Venett. By the age 14 Antoine was playing in New Orleans bars.
In 1947 Billy Diamond, a New Orleans bandleader after hearing Antoine at a backyard BBQ, nicknamed him Fats Domino, Antoine reminded Billy of Fats Waller after hearing Domino’s rolling piano triplets and asked Domino to join his band, the Solid Senders. Which was just the beginning of Fats Domino’s epic career. To hear the rest of Fats Domino’s amazing jazz beginnings join us on this Zoom.
