Blockhouse Point Conservation Park is a 630-acre natural area along the Potomac River that blends rich ecological resources with deep cultural history. The park features mature upland and floodplain forests, wetlands, stream systems, and dramatic river-rock outcrops, along with sweeping views of the Potomac River and the historic C&O Canal corridor. It is also recognized for its biodiversity, including several rare and watchlist plant species and a wide variety of native wildlife, making it one of Montgomery County’s most significant natural preserves.
Woven throughout the landscape are trails that reflect the park’s Civil War heritage, once part of a larger network used for movement, communication, and supply transport during the conflict. These routes connected to the strategic defense system along the Potomac, where Union forces monitored activity and protected key crossings. Today, visitors can explore these same pathways, experiencing both the natural beauty of the park and the historic significance of a landscape shaped by war and time.
