Father’s Day Weekend Fun: June 16-18

It’s Father’s Day weekend. And if you’re like the rest of us, you’re probably stumped on what kind of gift to get dad this year. Sure, you can buy him a “World’s Greatest Dad” mug, a new spatula for when he’s flipping burgers on the grill, or the ever-reliable necktie. Why not really make this his weekend and take him out to lunch or dinner at a nearby restaurant, watch his favorite movie or just hang out and make some great memories together? (Okay, you should probably still get the necktie too).

This weekend in Montgomery County, MD, we have a host of fantastic events to make this Father’s Day truly memorable. Here’s your round up for Father’s Day weekend 2017.

AFI Docs

Screenings will take place in Washington, D.C. as well as the AFI Silver Theatre. Documentaries in the festival are seen by influential audiences that have the ability to shape our society such as cultural leaders, senators, congresspersons and Supreme Court Justices. If your dad loves the blues, then you should definitely take him to the 9th annual Silver Spring Blues Festival this Saturday, June 17. It’ll be an all-day block party starting at 10 a.m. with two stages, vendors and crafts. It’s happening in downtown Silver Spring, so you’ll have plenty of restaurant options and can enjoy your food and beverages outside with the music.

WHEN: Saturday, June 17, 10 a.m. – 9:30+ p.m.
WHERE: Downtown Silver Spring
916 Ellsworth Drive
Silver Spring, MD 20910

Take Me Fishing

There are few pastimes as great as fishing with your dad. This Saturday, Seneca Creek State Park will be hosting a free, fishing event for all ages and skill levels. Meet at the Boat Center and join an expert angler for a beginner’s course in fishing (if your dad needs it). The park will supply rods and reels, or you may bring your own. Note: anyone over 16 years of age will need to bring a Maryland non-titled fishing license.

WHEN: Saturday, June 17, 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
WHERE: Seneca Creek State Park
11950 Clopper Road
Gaithersburg, MD 20878

Fit Father’s Day

While the “dad bod” might be in style now, a little more definition doesn’t hurt. Take dad and the whole family out for a fitness celebration on Father’s Day. You can take part in group workouts, fitness games, a Zumba class and yoga sessions with celebrity trainer Michelangelo Bance and the Baltimore Ravens’ Kyle Arrington. Enjoy healthy snacks from Whole Foods, an interactive kid’s area, giveaways and live music from DJ Blinks. There’ll also be the Fit Mom and Mr. Fit Father contests with $2,500 in prizes from Nike, Bose, Road Runner Sports, Modell’s, Soul Cycle and more! If your family really enjoys the event, see our Outdoor Activities page for more great ideas on how you can work up a sweat and get active in the area.
