African American Heritage Sites

Stories of the Underground Railroad are rich and rooted deep into Montgomery County, Maryland. By being so close to the free North, freedom was easier to obtain because of the distance but it was still a dangerous journey. The multitude of historic sites and experiences located across the county make it a choice destination for history buffs or visitors looking to understand the trials, tribulations, and heroism of the freedom seekers. Connect the paths from past to present, by planning an African American Heritage road trip this weekend.

International Underground Railroad Month

September 2024 marks the 6th annual International Underground Railroad Month in Maryland. The month acknowledges the significance of the Underground Railroad, and all those involved, for its contribution to the eradication of slavery in the United States and as a cornerstone for the more comprehensive civil rights movement that followed. Special programs will be offered a throughout the month to commemorate Montgomery County’s significant African American history and heritage.
