The Washington Balalaika Orchestra is excited to present our fall concert, The Stars Align! Our program will feature the fantastic skill of our distinguished soloists: world-renowned domra player, Ekaterina Skliar, and our esteemed balalaika virtuoso, Andrei Saveliev.
Ekaterina Skliar promises to captivate the audience with a number of classical pieces including a sensual tango by Danish composer Gade, “Jalousie—Tango Tsigane,” and French composer Fauré’s “Après un Rêve.” Andrei Saveliev, will enchant the audience with Shalov’s “Valenki.”
Our “Stars Align!” audience will also recognize “Por Una Cabeza” by Argentine composer Gardel from Al Pacino’s sensual tango scene in the movie, “Scent of a Woman.” Other musical selections include “U Samovara,” a foxtrot by Polish composer Gordon, and a lively piece by called “Tzena, Tzena, Tzena,” which was made famous by Pete Seeger and The Weavers.
The Washington Balalaika Orchestra, founded in 1988, is a community-based orchestra of volunteers who are dedicated to the study, perpetuation, and performance of Eastern European music on traditional folk instruments including the balalaika, domra, bayan and gusli, as well as some wind and percussion instruments, under the direction of our esteemed conductor, Svetlana Nikonova. It is the largest orchestra of its kind in the United States and has been performing in the Greater Washington area for almost 40 years.
