Her fictional homeland, the struggling principality of Pontevedro, faces near financial ruin and desperately needs her vast fortune to remain within its borders — which means she must marry a fellow Pontevedrian.
To steer her toward a suitable match, the country’s ambassador turns to Count Danilo Danilovitch, a charming nobleman with a roving eye who also happens to be the widow Hanna Glawari’s former love. The catch: Danilo is reluctant to confess his feelings, worried she might mistake genuine affection for a scheme to get at her money. This mutual hesitation sets off a lively chain of romantic misunderstandings, playful flirtations, and comedic entanglements.
