American history is filled with political leaders who were intelligent, experienced, and capable — and who still made carefully considered decisions that proved catastrophic. From John Adams’ embrace of the Alien and Sedition Acts to a parade of miscalculations stretching across two centuries of American politics, we’ll examine not the impulsive blunders but the strategic decisions — ones that made sense at the time to the people making them — and trace the consequences that followed.
