With Covid-19 and seniors’ health foremost in our minds, our in-person classes have a limited capacity. The majority of our programs are online via Zoom. Zoom is easy to use and we are here to help you with it!
It’s YOUR time to join a discussion group, try a new exercise class, and broaden your horizons!
Founded in 1993, Washington Metropolitan OASIS is part of a national award-winning 501c3 nonprofit organization promoting healthy and successful aging by encouraging lifelong learning, healthy living, and intergenerational volunteer community service. By offering over 450 classes per year, travel activities, and volunteer opportunities pairing older adults with elementary school children to improve literacy skills, self-esteem, and healthy habits, we engage and inspire this target population to remain healthy and active. The Montgomery County older adult population is expected to double in the next 10 years. Thus, building the local capacity of programs and services required to meet the needs of this population is critical to maintaining the wellbeing of our communities. A MacArthur Foundation study of Aging in America in the 21st Century (December 2009) found that:
• Loneliness and social isolation … can exacerbate chronic illness and can contribute to greatly increased mortality rates
• Older adults who focus on physical, intellectual, and social growth, live longer, happier, and healthier lives
• An activities-based lifestyle carries the benefits of increased self-confidence, greater opportunities for social interaction, and better connections to the community, promoting the health benefits of decreased mortality, better immune functions, and lower rates of depression
As experts in successful aging, we firmly believe at the Washington Metropolitan Oasis that our programs and volunteer opportunities offer a lifeline to our members, who continue to learn, live healthier lives, socialize and give back to their communities.
Yours in Healthy Aging,
The Oasis Team
