In Jonesville, a family-based community formed by freed slaves, visitors will find The Thomas Harper Cabin. Built by the Harper family in the 1870s to raise their ten children, the home was extremely small with no running water and no electricity.
Typical of several dozen family-based communities formed by freed slaves in Montgomery County after the Civil War, Jonesville was settled on land actually owned by the residents.
