Celebrate the New Year with Maryland’s annual First Day Hike at Seneca Creek State Park! Enjoy a self-guided 3.7-mile hike along the scenic Lakeshore Trail, featuring beautiful winter views of Clopper Lake and opportunities to spot local wildlife.
Begin your adventure at the Expo Field, where park rangers and volunteers will greet you with hot cocoa, family-friendly games, and nature activities to get you ready for the trail. Use field guides and scavenger hunts to explore the trail! After your hike, gather around the campfire for s’mores and pick up your “I Hiked 2026” sticker to celebrate the day. Please wear comfortable hiking shoes, dress for the weather, and bring plenty of drinking water.
All ages welcome! Start your year with fresh air, good company, and the beauty of the outdoors at Seneca Creek State Park.
Entrance to the park is free during January. Leashed pets are welcome. Trails are unpaved and often have exposed roots and rocks. Trails are not wheelchair or stroller accessible. Bathrooms are available at the start near the Expo Field and on the opposite side of the lake and trail at the Quail Ridge Picnic Area.
