A recent biography of Josiah Henson reveals new insights into his life, values, and aspirations. Earlier biographies relied solely on his four dictated autobiographies—most of which were heavily embellished by publishers. Outside research now paints a fuller and more accurate picture of Henson, who has long been referred to as “the real Uncle Tom.” In his own words, spoken during a speech in Scotland, he declared, “My name is not Tom,” distancing himself from the fictional character. Historian Susan Soderberg, who has spent more than 40 years bringing history to life through writing, lectures, and tours, will share Henson’s compelling story.
