Pauline Rakis was born in Detroit, Michigan. At the age of five her family relocated to Washington, D.C. where Pauline grew up and went to school.
At age 17 as a junior at Calvin Coolidge High School she took an art class that inspired love of art and her decision to pursue art after graduation.
Pauline’s passion remained in the art world as she raised her family and built a career in banking. In transitioning from work at the bank, she began taking art classes and workshops. She immersed herself in weekend sketching classes, acrylic painting workshops, and finally programs and classes in France, Greece and Canada.
Having explored various media and styles, Pauline expanded her portfolio of landscapes and still life to include abstracts and collages. Frequently, she does not declare an intention for her paintings. They evolve from the application from the shapes and colors she applies to the surfaces. Viewers and her collectors have commented on the joy they feel from her bold colors.
My paintings have an element of discovery,” she says. “I may have an idea when I start working, but the painting can often take a different direction. The laying down of shapes and colors often brings out an unexpected image that can be developed further. A traditional theme or central image emerges such as a landscape, still life, seascape or even an abstraction. The most exciting part is the unveiling of this imagery as I continue to work on each piece.”
The beachKraft Gallery is excited to host Rakis‘ work and share it with the community at large.
See Pauline Rakis’ paintings at the gallery, Tuesday through Sunday, 12 PM to 8 PM.
An Opening Reception will be held for the artist Saturday September 6th, 5 PM to 7 PM. Light refreshment will be available to guests. Artist receptions at the gallery are always free to attend.
