The Wheaton Urban District is excited to announce the launch of the Wheaton Streetery Block Party Series, a monthly open-streets event taking place on the third Saturday of each month through October. This series will activate the heart of downtown Wheaton with outdoor dining, live entertainment and family-friendly programming in a safe, walkable environment.
The first event will be Saturday, May 17, with a live DJ from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., street closures, and programming and dining opportunities until 8 p.m. There will also be free ice cream and face painting from 2-5 p.m.
Full closure of Elkin Street to traffic from the Wheaton Laundromat to Price Avenue will be in effect beginning at 9 a.m.
Parking spaces along Price Avenue will be closed, while maintaining two-way vehicle traffic.
A Streetery, originally launched in this area in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, offered outdoor space for dining and gathering when indoor venues were closed. The area was restored to its basic condition. The space is returning with seasonal activities to follow through on the County’s commitment to revitalizing it.
“This block party series is a small but meaningful way we can use our public spaces to support local businesses and bring people together,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “We are building on experiences from the pandemic and replicating experiences that help create community.”
