The National Capital Trolley Museum is proud to announce its annual DC Transit Day on Saturday, January 25th, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This special event commemorates the anniversary of the end of streetcar service in Washington, DC, which officially concluded on January 28, 1962, after nearly a century of operation. Visitors are invited to join the museum in honoring the region’s transit history and exploring its modern-day transportation initiatives.
DC Transit Day promises to be a dynamic and educational experience for all ages. Highlights of this year’s event include:
• Streetcar Rides: Ride on vintage streetcars from the museum’s collection, some of which were once part of Washington, DC’s bustling streetcar system.
• Special Guest Speaker: Renowned local author and historian, John DeFerrari, will share insights from his extensive research on the history of transit in the DC area. DeFerrari is the author of “The Streetcars of Washington, D.C.” and has become a leading voice on the topic of DC’s transportation history.
• Book Signing Event: Author and rail historian, Beth Anne Keates, co-author with Kenneth Springirth on over 50 books on trolleys and trains, including, “Trolleys of Washington, DC” and “Baltimore Streetcar Memories” will be signing copies of their latest book, “Viewing SEPTA’s Rail Heritage” as well as other published titles.
• Local Transit Agencies: Representatives from WMATA, DC Streetcar, and the Maryland Purple Line will be on hand to discuss the evolution of the region’s transit system and the exciting future of public transportation.
• Historical Exhibits: Explore engaging displays and artifacts showcasing the history of streetcars in Washington, DC, from their inception to the end of service in 1962.
• Model Railroad Display: The Maryland TTrakers will showcase a detailed model layout offering visitors a unique glimpse into the history and future of transit in the DC area.
