It is nearly impossible to speak of jazz pioneer Buddy Bolden without invoking myth and exaggeration. Bolden, an African-American cornetist in 1900’s New Orleans, played a passionate, embryonic version of what would become known as jazz. He is remembered as a pioneer who combined instrumental dance music with blues and ragtime melodies played in a loud, rough manner that could be heard miles away. From all accounts, Bolden’s music was powerful, stirring, and magical. Alas, there are no recordings to document his reputation. Join Grammy-nominated jazz historian David Sager, as he sheds light on Buddy Bolden’s sound and style. Trombonist Sager, in his post at the Library of Congress helped develop the National Juke Box, a collection of historical musical recordings. The Bolden event takes place via Zoom at 7pm (EASTERN) on Monday, October 7th.
