Top Outdoor Weekend Events: June 9-11

Did you know the phrase, “work hard, play hard,” can be traced all the way back to 1827? It’s a mantra that’s just as relevant today as it was then. And now that you’ve made it to the weekend – it’s time to put it in action.

This weekend in Montgomery County, MD, we have a ton of awesome outdoor events filled with amazing music and delicious food. Here’s your weekend round up for June 9-11, 2017.

Friday Night Live

This summer, Rockville Town Square will host its Friday Night Live summer concert series at the Dawson’s Market stage every Friday until Sept. 1. There will be fantastic food, wine and beer from the restaurants at Rockville Town Square. Scotch Bonnets, a Baltimore-based band that fuses punk rock and reggae, will be performing this weekend. Taste of Jamaica

Get a sample of Kingston in Silver Spring. This event will feature the best of Jamaican Cuisine and live entertainment featuring reggae, soul and R&B. All food purchases at Taste of Jamaica will benefit the Jamaica Education for the Poor Foundation. It’s good food for a good cause.

Takoma Park Jazz Festival

Do you love jazz? Then, head over to the Takoma Park Jazz Festival. The event will have two stages with music featuring local and nationally known performers. There will be food and arts & crafts vendors along the streets during the festival. This is a FREE family-friendly event which is held rain or shine.

Tastes of Africa

If you’ve ever been curious about all the different African cultures and communities that call Montgomery County home, then make your way to Downtown Silver Spring this Sunday. The Tastes of Africa festival is designed to encourage cross-cultural exchange within the Washington, D.C. area and educate kids and adults on African arts and culture. There will be food, arts & crafts, live performances and even a fashion show.

*Bonus Outdoor Fun on the C&O Canal*

This summer, take a trip back in time to the 1870’s! Ride along the historic C&O Canal in a boat pulled by mules. Experience rising eight feet in a lock. Hear park rangers in period clothing describe what life was like for the people who lived and worked floating on the canal.

Cost: $8 for adults (ages 16-61), $6 for seniors (ages 62+) and $5 for children (ages 4-15). Children ages three and under ride free.

Purchase tickets and board the boat at:

10 or more people are required to make advance reservations for the boat ride. Otherwise, seats are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Charles F. Mercer boat capacity is 65 people. The boat programs last approximately one hour.
