Things to Do This Weekend: Sept. 8-10

School buses are rounding neighborhood corners. Temperatures are dropping. And, pumpkin spice flavors are starting to pop up in stores. It’s starting to feel like fall here in Montgomery County, Maryland! As you throw on your favorite sweater and grab your first pumpkin spice latte of the season, plan to check out some of these awesome events going on this weekend.

In The Heights


Created by Lin-Manual Miranda of Hamilton fame, In the Heights is a Broadway musical that four Tony Awards® including Best Musical. Now, Olney Theatre Center and Round House Theatre unite to transport Miranda’s Washington Heights from the top of Manhattan to the Olney Mainstage. Usnavi, the proprietor of the corner bodega, guides us through his neighborhood of striving immigrants and young lovers, where hip-hop meets salsa and soul. This week marks the show’s opening weekend; it will run until Oct. 15. Bethesda Contemporary Art Awards Exhibit


For the 15th year, The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District and the Bethesda Urban Partnership will showcase the work of The Trawick Prize: Bethesda Contemporary Art Awards’ eight finalists, all local artists, in a group exhibition.

WHEN: The exhibit will be on display from Sept. 6 – 30. The public opening reception will be held Friday, Sept. 8 from 6 – 8 p.m. Gallery hours for the duration of the exhibit are Wednesday through Saturday, 12 – 6 p.m.

Carnival of Chocolates


The 25th annual Carnival of Chocolates is this weekend. The event is free to attend in the Rockville Town Square. There will be live entertainment, raffles, prizes, story time and of course – CHOCOLATE! Chocolate tastings require a $1.00 token purchase per tasting. Proceeds from the event benefit The Dwelling Place, Inc., a 501C3 in Montgomery County helping homeless families in the area attain self-sufficiency.

Silver Spring Jazz Festival

The Silver Spring Jazz Festival features a mix of jazz, rock, classical, jam band influences and Afro-Cuban and world rhythms by the Lao Tizer Band, the cool stylings of Marcus Johnson, Afro-Caribbean percussion by Chembo & Grupo Chaworó, the Gospel influenced Sharp Radway Quintet, and the amazing youth talent of the Jazz Academy of Music led by Paul Carr.

Takoma Park Folk Festival


The Takoma Park Folk Festival celebrates the cultural diversity of the region by offering performances over 50 musicians and dancers from all over the world. There will also be over 25 artisan booths and more than 15 varieties of food vendors to choose from. Various stages will offer kids the chance to join in with musical games and dancing.
