7 Things to Do This Summer

Kick off your summer in Montgomery County, Maryland with these seven activities you absolutely must try – just a few miles north of Washington, DC.

1. Go for a Hike

Sugarloaf Mountain

Sugarloaf Mountain is located in Dickerson, Maryland. The mountain is open to the public and free to enter. Sugarloaf offers three well-marked hiking trails: a 2.5 mile, 5 mile or a 7 mile loop.

Great Falls Park (on the Maryland side)

There are different hiking trails available at Great Falls Park in Potomac that follow the path between the C&O Canal and the Potomac River within the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park.

2. Paddleboarding

Head north to Little Seneca Lake in Black Hill Regional Park. The beautiful 505-acre lake extends along 14 scenic miles of Seneca Creek, as it winds its way to the Potomac River. This area contains many scenic areas, including the 90-acre Clopper Lake, surrounded by forests and fields. Paddle boards are available to rent at $14/hour.

3. Kayaking

Rent a kayak at Rock Creek Regional Park and enjoy the beautiful 75-acre Lake Needwood. Kayaks are also available to rent Little Seneca Lake.

4. Beer Tasting on a Horse Farm

Waredaca Brewing Company is a Montgomery County’s premier farm brewery committed to sustainability, incorporating local ingredients for brewing beer using the best practices possible. 5. Zipline

The Adventure Park in Sandy Spring

Montgomery County has two zipline parks! Visit both this summer for some fun in the trees!
The Adventure Park in Sandy Spring consists of 13 different courses varying in degree of difficulty. Each trail has zip lines but primarily consist of “bridges” between tree platforms made of rope, cable and wood configurations creating over 190 unique challenges. The Adventure Park also offers night time climbing!

Go Ape – Treetop Adventure

Go Ape in Rock Creek Regional Park in Rockville is home to six zip lines, numerous rope ladders, 44 crossings to include the Stirrups and Twister, two tarzan swings and America’s first skateboard zip line.

6. Berry Picking

Head to Butler’s Orchard and pick your own! Strawberry season may be over but blueberries and more will be ripe and ready for picking’!

7. See the Sunflowers

The sunflower field at McKee Beshers Wildlife Management Area are expected to bloom early to mid-July.
