27th Annual Heritage Days Weekend

This year marks the 27th annual Heritage Days weekend – a countywide festival offering programs, activities, and tours appealing to visitors of all ages and interests and will take place June 27 and 28.
In addition to Civil War and agricultural history, the stories of local railroads and trolleys, African American communities, life along the C&O Canal, astronomy, and much more are featured.
Heritage Days also highlights local arts & culture as well as outdoor recreation, including biking, hiking, and walking tours. Many venues offer musical entertainment, activities and crafts for children, and refreshments.
- Live Entertainment: Enjoy outdoor musical performances and interactive shows on the museum grounds.
- Historic Tours: Take a walk through the 1832 stone barn at Woodlawn Museum and walk the Underground Railroad Trail to the historic Sandy Spring Friends Meeting House.
- Family Activities: The nearby Sandy Spring Slave Museum offers a variety of tours and hands-on activities for children.

Heritage Days Themes
Rivers, Roads, & Rails:
Transportation traces the
Metropolitan Branch of the B&O Railroad as it runs through
late 1800s communities including Silver Spring and
Gaithersburg. e C&O Canal’s towpath and scenic byway
both parallel the Potomac River, where you can hike, bike,
paddle, and explore the ingenious aqueducts, locks, and culverts
that were engineering marvels of their time.
Crossroads & Cultures: Home to Many Peoples
tells the rich histories of Montgomery County’s people, the most diverse
in Maryland. ese include the long-standing Quaker
communities of Sandy Spring and Brookeville; the many early
free Black communities represented by local churches,
community buildings, and cemeteries; and immigrant groups
from around the globe who have enriched the area’s culture.
The Agricultural Reserve: Farms, Markets,
Conservation, and Rural Life
encompasses the 93,000 acres of
protected farmland in the western part of the county — one of
the most successful countryside preservation programs in the
U.S. e “Ag Reserve” showcases beautiful vistas, winding
country roads, historic buildings, pick-your-own farms, and
farmers markets.
Heritage Discoveries: Unique Stories of Local History,
Culture, and Nature
features the authentic sites that make
Montgomery County unique, from historic houses to Civil War
sites to parks, theatres, and historical societies.
