Now in its 26th year, the AFI Latin American Film Festival showcases the best filmmaking from Latin America and, with the inclusion of films from Spain and Portugal, celebrates Ibero-American cultural connections. This year’s selection of films will once again include numerous international film festival favorites, award winners, local box office hits and debut works by promising new talents.

Highlights of the festival include Opening Night film SAND DOLLARS, starring legendary actress Geraldine Chaplin; MESSI, a docudrama about the world’s greatest soccer player; Spanish thriller MARSHLAND, winner of 10 Goya Awards; the U.S. premiere of Colombia’s ALIAS MARIA, straight from its debut at the Cannes Film Festival; Peru’s gripping film noir THE VANISHED ELEPHANT; WITHOUT WINGS, the first U.S. feature to be made in Cuba since 1959; Mexico’s Almodovar-esque comedy ELVIRA, I’D GIVE YOU MY LIFE BUT I’M USING IT; Guatemala’s IXCANUL, winner of top prizes from the Berlin, Guadalajara and Cartagena Film Festivals; THE EMPTY CLASSROOM, an omnibus film about education in Latin America, made under the direction of Gael Garcia Bernal; Kristen Wiig in NASTY BABY, the latest film from Chilean filmmaker Sebastian Silva; Argentine soccer dramedy THE FIVE; and Costa Rican romantic comedy VIAJE.
